A commission I completed for @princessizumi, who requested Zuko, Azula, and baby Izumi! Thank you for the commission!

An image with a gold trim border. The artist’s tag, JasmineByTheBay, is on the top and the image is watermarked Commission, Do not use.

An adult Firelord Zuko, wearing long robes with some flower detail, is reading a paperback book with one hand while holding a baby Izumi with another. Izumi, who is dressed in a simple sleeveless robe with a flower embroided on the back and wearing a red bracelet, is reaching over her father’s back in glee for her Aunt Azula. Azula, who is also wearing long robes and some lip, eye, and forehead makeup, stands behind Zuko with a sharp, mischievous smile and shows Izumi a blue flame. Zuko is completely unbothered by the fact and just continues reading.

do the tides command this ship?

azula’s opening monologue does such a fantastic job of immediately establishing her character. we see the terrifying dominance she exerts over people; the absolute authority she assumes within herself, even over nature (zhao killing the moon provides another example of this mentality among the fire nation); and crucially, her hubristic confidence that she can use fear to control others at all times, which ultimately proves her downfall.

she claims that she is more powerful than the tides, as if she no longer considers herself a mere human being. while her ship is lucky enough to bypass the tides and dock safely in the harbor, as is always her way, her luck will run out soon enough. this monologue not introduces her character, but also her ending: katara, unlike azula, can command the tides, and she uses her control over water—an element azula was always raised to believe was inferior to fire—to ultimately defeat her.

image

there you are, filthy peasant!

note azula demeaning her and asserting her perceived superiority over katara in the same moment as she plays right into katara’s hand as she deals the winning blow.

image

azula’s imperialist supremacist doctrine she had internalized since birth was her inevitable ruin. as we see in her first proper introduction in 2x01 “the avatar state,” even from the start, her influence was a facade; her power was always hollow.

casual sex is fine having multiple partners is fine hookups are fine being friends w benefits with someone is fine. stop talking like televangelists.

They really aren’t at all and we need to stop normalizing this.

this is the funniest comment i got on this post. im normalizing sex what are you gonna do about it

We can normalize sex in loving and reciprocal relationships rather than normalizing the fear of deep emotional intimacy and settling for shallow interactions.

we can normalize getting hole and not acting like a puritan. i have normalized taking your mom to pound town

cntrl15 asked:

What are your thoughts on "baiting" with regards to Hacks 1x07? The writers seemed to play down any possible attraction very suddenly, after leaning into it hard in the first half of the ep. I didn't personally feel it was exploitative or anything and it would be fine if the writers kept things platonic between Ava/Deborah; just wondering how people are feeling about it. I suppose it's hard to call it bait given the awesome amount of explicit queerness on the show.

I don’t think it’s bait at all. Ava is bi, as is the actress who plays her. I think that recently, the common use of “queerbaiting” has gone from “teasing fans with the idea of straight characters doing queer stuff that’ll never happen” to “I want these characters to be a couple, and if they’re not, I’ve been baited.” Being baited isn’t the same thing as being disappointed.

@chainofclovers has a great post you might find interesting!
